Smart People, Smart Process, Smart Factory

Smart People + Smart Process = Smart Factory

The S3 project is creating a living, real time carbon footprint.

S3's effectiveness is based on a simple premise:

That to reduce emissions you first must measure and monitor, then identify where you can improve, then finally put improvements into effect.

This is a repeating cycle which requires constant checking, correcting, and identifying new areas of progress.

About the S3 Project

S3 (Smart people, Smart process, Smart factory) is a new project that will collect and interpret manufacturing process data in real time, outpacing the previous averaged models we have had to use for, amongst other things, waste management and greenhouse gas emission footprinting.

At our Innovate UK Project, a complex web of sensors and other monitoring devices are linked together to provide a constantly updated record of every event in the manufacturing process. This will be the first time the industry has ever had such close, unit-level monitoring data available at such speed.

The data will then be utilised by Artificial Intelligence (AI)-supported analytical tools to provide second-by-second feedback on processes, with a particular emphasis on food losses and energy consumption.

Being able to see waste occurring and track its cause instantly will give production management a new level of insight and control – creating a living carbon footprint.

More radically, S3 factories will be able to present the data gained from real-time monitoring in a ‘gamified’ form, where it can be instantly understood and acted on by factory floor staff, and where their refinements can be evaluated and earn them ‘in-game’ rewards.

Why?
Food manufacturers are at the heart of our food system, converting ingredients into products, with many resources flowing through their facilities. These systems are under pressure from climate change making the food system insecure.

The global food system is facing a crisis in energy use and waste management. We need to reduce our impact and make better use of our resources to reduce our greenhouse gas footprints and optimize production.

We urgently need to be able to determine where energy and resources are being lost before we can even begin to make improvements.

So we need the most comprehensive, most immediate data possible. Currently businesses have a problem.

They rely on legacy data to establish greenhouse gas emission footprints, and their analysis is often inaccurate because the data is not live and is only derived from a part of their process chain. There is no complete, real-time picture that manufacturers can respond to.

We aim to fix this by delivering real-time, comprehensive greenhouse gas emission footprinting.

The S3 project will provide this information in a form that both management and production staff can see and use to help get their resource footprint down to the smallest possible size - and keep it there.
